About Us

On October 28, 2018, a historic swell arrived in Nazaré. It was Jorge on the radio calling surfer Maya Gabeira for a wave that would later become recognized by the Guinness Book as the biggest wave ever surfed by a woman.

Jorge’s extensive archive of the early days of surfing in Nazaré provided the foundation for the television series 100 Foot Wave. He served as cinematographer and co-producer of Maya and the Wave, which tells Maya Gabeira’s story.

About me

PHOTOGRAPHY Give people´s hope

Jorge “Jesus” Leal is a Portuguese artist best known for his iconic photographs of the giant waves of Nazaré.

Born in Porto and trained at the School of Fine Arts, he worked on various projects as a photographer, filmmaker and graphic designer. Jorge’s passion for the ocean brought him to Nazaré in 2010, with the arrival of surfer Garrett McNamara.

Jorge’s famous photograph of Garrett’s first world record at Nazaré is one of the most widely circulated images in big wave history. Jorge and Garrett made three films with The North Canyon Project and Jorge stayed in Nazaré, continuing to capture every major swell.

Jorge’s images inspired a generation of surfers to brave the greatest wave in the world.

He captured their feats, and also served as a favored “spotter” – his voice on the radio calling them into position for the best waves.

Just weeks after celebrating the premiere of Maya and the Wave at the Toronto International Film Festival,  Jorge suffered a massive stroke to the brain stem and became completely paralyzed.

For months he struggled for his life, only able to communicate by blinking one letter at a time.

With remarkable will and determination, Jorge regained the ability to breathe, to eat and to move. His creative spirit always alive, he typed a memoir and a screenplay with one hand. After six months of rehabilitation, Jorge had enough strength to hold a brush, and turned his hospital room into an art studio.

One year after the incident, Jorge took his first steps at home in Porto, a rare achievement for the severity of his stroke. He continues his rehabilitation, while also painting, writing and working with his sweeping archive of images.
